Why do people like chicken and waffles together?

A sweet and savory Southern classic that combines crispy fried chicken with fluffy golden waffles, drizzled with maple syrup for the ultimate comfort food brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Fried Chicken:
  • 4 boneless chicken thighs or breasts
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • For the Waffles:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • To Serve:
  • Maple syrup
  • Butter (optional)
  • Fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine buttermilk and hot sauce. Add chicken, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or overnight for best flavor).
  2. In another bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Heat oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C). Remove chicken from marinade, dredge in the flour mixture, and fry until golden brown and internal temp reaches 165°F (75°C), about 6–8 minutes per side. Transfer to a wire rack to drain.
  4. For the waffles, preheat a waffle iron. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Pour into dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  6. Cook batter in waffle iron until golden and crisp, about 4–5 minutes per waffle.
  7. Place a piece of fried chicken over a waffle. Drizzle generously with maple syrup. Add butter and parsley if desired.
  8. Serve hot and enjoy immediately for the best texture.

Notes

  • Marinating overnight gives the chicken more flavor.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken is cooked through.
  • Waffles can be kept warm in a low oven while frying the chicken.
