What type of roll is used for a Philly cheesesteak?

Philly Cheesesteak

A classic, hearty sandwich with tender slices of beef, sautéed onions, and melted cheese on a perfectly toasted hoagie roll. A perfect comfort food for any occasion!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ribeye steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese, optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional: sautéed bell peppers, mushrooms, or hot peppers

Instructions

  1. Freeze the ribeye steak for about 1 hour to make it easier to slice thinly. Once frozen, thinly slice the steak against the grain into small strips.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 5-7 minutes, until golden and softened. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the remaining olive oil. Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the thinly sliced steak, and season with salt and pepper. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the steak is browned and cooked through.
  4. Once the steak is cooked, add the sautéed onions back into the skillet. Mix together, and cook for another 1-2 minutes to combine the flavors.
  5. Split the hoagie rolls and lay them open. Divide the steak and onion mixture evenly among the rolls. Top each with 1 slice of cheese. Let the cheese melt slightly from the heat of the steak.
  6. Serve immediately while hot. Optionally, add sautéed bell peppers, mushrooms, or hot peppers to the sandwich for extra flavor.

Notes

  • You can customize your Philly cheesesteak with sautéed bell peppers, mushrooms, or hot peppers for extra flavor.
  • For a more indulgent sandwich, you can use American cheese instead of provolone.
