Red Velvet Biscotti: A Delightful Twist on a Classic Treat

Red velvet is a flavor that evokes rich imagery of elegance and indulgence. Its deep red hue and subtle cocoa flavor have captivated dessert lovers for generations. We’re taking this beloved classic and giving it a twist by transforming it into a crunchy, delightful biscotti that pairs perfectly with your morning coffee or afternoon tea. Introducing: Red Velvet Biscotti with White Chocolate Chips and Heart Sprinkles. This recipe is not only delicious but also visually stunning, making it perfect for Valentine’s Day, wedding showers, or simply a treat for yourself.

Ingredients

Before diving into the baking process, let’s gather all the necessary ingredients. Remember, precision is key in baking, so measure carefully!

  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour: Spoon the flour into your measuring cup to avoid packing it in, which could result in an overly dense biscotti.
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup Dutch processed cocoa powder: This gives the biscotti a rich chocolate flavor while keeping the color vibrant.
  • 2 oz liquid red food color or 2 tbsp gel food color: This is essential for achieving that classic red velvet hue.
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1½ tsp vanilla extract: Vanilla enhances the overall flavor profile of the biscotti.
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips: These add a sweet, creamy contrast to the rich cocoa.
  • ½ cup heart sprinkles: For that final decorative touch, perfect for special occasions.

Instructions

With ingredients at the ready, let’s embark on making these delicious Red Velvet Biscotti.

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). While preheating, prepare your baking sheets by lining them with parchment paper.

  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In the bowl of your mixer, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, red food coloring, baking powder, and salt. Mix on the slowest setting to ensure all dry ingredients are evenly distributed.

  3. Prepare the wet ingredients: In a separate small bowl, beat the eggs and vanilla extract lightly with a fork. This helps incorporate air and ensures an even distribution in the dough.

  4. Combine wet and dry mixtures: Slowly add the egg mixture to the flour mixture in your mixer bowl. Mix until well combined. The dough will be sticky yet firm.

  5. Incorporate the white chocolate chips: Gently fold in the white chocolate chips using a spatula, ensuring they are evenly dispersed throughout the dough.

  6. Shape the dough: Divide the dough in half to create two large loaves. Alternatively, you can opt for three medium-sized loaves. Shape each portion into a rectangle approximately 4-5 inches wide and 7-8 inches long.

  7. Bake the loaves: Place the loaves on your prepared baking sheet and bake for about 30 minutes or until the tops are set.

  8. Cooling and slicing: Once baked, remove the loaves from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 300°F (150°C). Allow the loaves to cool slightly before slicing them into ½ to 1-inch wide pieces.

  9. Second bake for crispiness: Arrange the slices on their sides on the baking sheet. Bake at 300°F for 10 minutes, then flip the slices and bake for an additional 8-10 minutes.

  10. Cooling and decorating: Allow the biscotti to cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, you can decorate them with heart sprinkles or store them in an airtight container for later enjoyment.

Serving Suggestions

These Red Velvet Biscotti are perfect on their own but can also be served alongside a hot cup of coffee, tea, or even a glass of milk. For an extra indulgent experience, try dipping them in melted white chocolate before adding the heart sprinkles. This not only enhances the visual appeal but also adds an extra layer of sweetness.

Whether you’re baking for a special occasion or simply treating yourself, these Red Velvet Biscotti are sure to impress. Enjoy the delightful crunch and rich flavors of this unique twist on a classic treat!
