Mixed Berry and Angel Food Trifle Recipe: A Delightful and Easy Dessert

When it comes to creating a dessert that is both visually stunning and delectably delicious, the Mixed Berry and Angel Food Trifle is a top contender. With layers of fluffy cake, a creamy, rich filling, and a burst of fresh berries, this dessert is not only a feast for the eyes but also a treat for the taste buds. Perfect for gatherings, celebrations, or just a simple indulgence at home, this trifle is as easy to make as it is impressive to serve.

Ingredients

  • For the Cream:

    • 2 cups (1 pint) heavy whipping cream, very cold
    • 1 cup cold milk (whole milk recommended, but any kind will do)
    • 5.1 oz package instant vanilla pudding
    • 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk, refrigerated
  • For the Trifle:

    • 2 blocks of angel food cake (12 oz each), available at most grocery stores
    • 2 lbs of berries (a mix of fresh and frozen works well)
      • 1 lb fresh strawberries, sliced
      • 16 oz bag frozen mixed berries, partially thawed
    • Strawberry fruit glaze, found near fresh berries in grocery stores

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cream

  1. Begin by beating the cold heavy whipping cream on high speed for about 3 minutes until it forms fluffy and stiff peaks. This is key to achieving that light, airy texture. Once whipped, refrigerate it until you’re ready to use it.

  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of cold milk with the instant vanilla pudding mix until well blended. Then, add the refrigerated sweetened condensed milk and whisk until smooth and creamy. Gently fold in the whipped cream, being careful not to deflate the mixture. Keep this in the refrigerator until assembly time.

Step 2: Assemble the Trifle

  1. Chop the angel food cake into 1-inch cubes. Start assembling the trifle by placing 1/3 of the cake cubes at the bottom of your trifle bowl.

  2. Add 1/3 of the prepared cream mixture over the cake cubes, spreading it somewhat evenly. Precision isn’t necessary here, as the layers will meld together beautifully.

  3. Layer with 1/4 of your berry mixture. For a visually appealing presentation, consider placing the strawberry slices along the walls of the bowl. Follow this by spreading a thin layer of strawberry fruit glaze over the berries.

  4. Repeat the layering process two more times, creating three layers in total. Finish with the remaining fruit on top, arranging it artfully for a decorative touch. Brush a thin layer of glaze over the top fruit layer for added shine and flavor.

Serving and Storage

This trifle is best served chilled and can be made a few hours ahead of time, allowing the flavors to meld together. Store it in the refrigerator until ready to serve. If you have leftovers, cover them tightly and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

Ingredients

Cream Layer
  • 473 ml Heavy Whipping Cream very cold
  • 240 ml cold milk any kind, but I used whole milk
  • 5.1 oz instant vanilla pudding
  • 14 oz sweetened condensed milk refrigerated
Cake and Fruit Layer
  • 24 oz angel food cake blocks I purchased mine at Fred Meyer; $3 each
  • 1 lb fresh strawberries sliced
  • 16 oz frozen mixed berries partially thawed in the fridge
  • 1 g Strawberry Fruit Glaze sold in any grocery store next to the fresh berries

Equipment

  • Trifle Bowl

Method

  1. Beat cold whipping cream on the highest speed for about 3 minutes or until fluffy and stiff peaks form. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Whisk 1 cup milk together with instant pudding until well blended, then whisk in 1 can refrigerated condensed milk until smooth. Gently fold in the whipped cream and refrigerate until ready to use.
  3. Chop your angel food cake into 1″ cubes and place 1/3 of them into the bottom of your trifle bowl.
  4. Add 1/3 of your cream and spread around somewhat evenly (it doesn’t have to be perfect!)
  5. Add 1/4 of your fresh/frozen fruit. I thought it looked pretty to put the strawberries around on the walls of the bowl, but you can do it any way you want to.
  6. Spread a thin layer of glaze over the fruit.
  7. Repeat steps 1-4 until you have 3 layers of cake.
  8. Arrange your remaining fruit over the top of your cake and brush a thin layer of glaze over the fruit.

Notes

This trifle is perfect for gatherings. Feel free to swap out the berries for stone fruits like peaches or nectarines if desired.
